How to make a soccer formation
- Choose how many players are on the field: 11v11, 9v9, 7v7 or 5v5.
- Pick a starting formation. The players drop into their default spots.
- Type names into the list. Drag any player on the pitch to fine-tune their spot.
- Print the board or download it as an image to share with the team.
Common soccer formations
4-4-2 is the classic: two banks of four and a pair of strikers. 4-3-3 pushes wingers high and suits teams that press. 4-2-3-1 adds two holding midfielders behind a playmaker. 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 trade a defender for width in midfield, and 5-3-2 is the safe choice when you need to protect a lead.
Small-sided games have their own shapes: 3-3-2, 3-2-3 and 2-3-3 for 9v9, 2-3-1, 3-2-1 and 2-1-2-1 for 7v7, and 2-2 or 1-2-1 for 5v5.
Formation vs lineup
A formation is the shape on the field. A lineup is who plays where and when. Use this board for the shape and the soccer lineup generator to rotate players fairly through it.

FAQ
Questions, answered.
Is the soccer formation maker free?
Yes. It works in your browser on a phone or computer, with no account and no download.
Can I move players off the default spots?
Yes. Drag any player anywhere on the pitch. Choosing a new formation resets everyone to that formation's spots.
How do I share the formation with my team?
Press Download image to save a picture you can post in your team chat, or Print for a paper copy. In BenchApp you can post the lineup straight to the team.
What formation is best for 7v7?
2-3-1 is the most common because it keeps a balanced shape with a keeper and six outfield players. 3-2-1 is safer at the back, and 2-1-2-1 gives you a holding midfielder.
